Welding Consumables and Gas Requirements
Wire grade and type will become dependent on the
- Desired Productivity Rate of Client
- Pipe Material, and
- Welding specification
This will also affect the price of consumables.
It is important when requesting information relating to automated
welding to know your desired production rate. There is no point throwing
a huge amount of equipment on a job in which pipe is lowered into a hole
and pushed through a tunnel. Production rates need to be realistic and a
forward thinking approach to civil works, unforeseen trenching issues,
right of way operation, etc. need to be dealt with prior to demanding a
large quantity of welds per day. It is the same when it comes to
pricing. There is no point pricing a job for a huge production rate if
the production cannot be reached.
The welding preparation edge is also a large factor in determining the
welding process and wire used. If clients wish to reduce bevel angles,
we would be in favour of using the faster Automated Gas Metal Arc
Welding process which would allow faster travel speed, less weld area to
fill, less gas flow times, which also uses a consumable of a reduced
amount compared to other wires.
If client does not require this reduction in weld area, we would
approach the project with a combination of controlled GMAW and Automated
Flux Cored Arc Welding. We are still able to gain good production rates
and mechanical strength using AFCAW, however the other advantages are
minimal in comparison to Automated GMAW process.
Gas requirements are determined following desired process and wire type
along with approval from client.
